Tiffin Sambar Recipe

Recipe for Tiffin Sambar:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 1 tbsp sambar powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the toor dal in water and soak it for 30 minutes. Drain the water and pressure cook the toor dal with 2 cups of water and turmeric powder for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
  2. Mash the cooked dal using a ladle or a hand blender and set aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds start to crackle, add cumin seeds, dry red chilies, and asafoetida.
  4. Add onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
  6. Add the tamarind paste and sambar powder. Mix well and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Add the mashed toor dal and mix well. Add water to adjust the consistency of the sambar.
  8. Add salt to taste and bring the sambar to a boil.
  9. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idli, dosa, or any other tiffin.

Note: You can adjust the amount of water depending on how thick or thin you want the sambar to be. You can also add vegetables like carrot, pumpkin, or brinjal to the sambar for extra flavor and nutrition.
